Dedicated to pushing the physical and emotional boundaries of dance, the response. (AKA The Response Dance Society) is a Vancouver-based contemporary dance company founded in March 2008 by Amber Funk Barton. The inspiration for this company lies in the ability of the human body, its capacity, its physical potential and its emotional make-up while investigating the possibilities of fusing together the articulation and sophistication of contemporary and classical technique with the athleticism, dynamics and energy of urban dance and culture.

Gee Dan holdings Ltd. presents
John McDermott - Raised on Songs and Stories Tour
Saturday, November 6th at 7:30pm

John McDermott is an artist whose sense of respect for tradition and understanding of the sentiment behind the music resonates worldwide.

“Legend” is not a title John McDermott would readily embrace, but his accomplishments have become legendary in recording industry lore. He calls Toronto and Boston home, but he has also found a home as an international recording star and household name – known as much for his successful musical career as for his commitment to veterans’ causes. He is a long way from the man for whom singing was a hobby less than ten years ago. John was discovered quite by chance, when working as a circulation sales representative for the Toronto Sun, he belted out an impromptu rendition of “Danny Boy” at a company party.

The Piano Quintet in A major was composed in 1819, when Schubert was only 22 years old. The well-known piece, written for an unusual arrangement of instruments: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, gets its nickname from the fourth movement, a set of variations on
Schubert's own Lied, "Die Forelle" (The Trout).

Also on the programme are Piano Quartets by Gustav Mahler and Joaquín Turina, as well as a Trio by Bohuslav Martin.

With some of Canada’s finest musicians collaborating on compelling and breathtaking repertoire, this concert promises to be one of the year’s highlights.

Trio Accord is developing a reputation as one of Canada’s premier chamber ensembles.

Based in Vancouver, BC, Mary Sokol Brown (violin), Andrew Brown (viola), and Ariel Barnes (cello) are ardent and enthusiastic proponents of chamber music. As performers, they offer unique insights about the music they play, enriching the concert experience for their listeners. As educators, Trio Accord’s members conduct chamber music workshops in BC’s scenic wine region and on the mystic Gulf Islands. They have been featured guest artists teaching and performing at the Northern Lights Music Festival in Ajijic, Mexico.

Trio Accord takes particular delight in presenting concerts in churches, private homes and other intimate settings suited to the spirit of chamber music. These concerts have been described as “enchanting,” “exhilarating,” and “extremely moving.”

Their recording of J.S. Bach's monumental work The Goldberg Variations (Skylark Music) has met with critical acclaim and was nominated for “best classical recording” at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards.

“Trio Accord’s performance ... provided a transcendent musical experience.”Victoria Times-Colonist

A member of Vancouver's professional music community for over thirty years, bassist David Brown has performed with most of the cities' musical organizations in existence during this time. In addition to a wide variety of live performance opportunities David also has extensive film and commercial recording experience. A recipient of two Canada Council Arts Grants, which enabled his studies at the Juilliard School, David has been a member of the Vancouver Symphony since 1978 and is also the bassist of The Turning Point Ensemble and the National Broadcast Orchestra (formerly the CBC Radio Orchestra). He has performed at the Grand Teton, Sitka, Northern Lights (Ajijic,Mexico), Ft.Macleod Alta., Juneau Jazz and Classics and CYMC Music Festivals. David enjoys a diverse range of musical interests and has a particular fondness for small ensemble settings of a chamber music or improvisational nature.

"A rarity of musical excellence, technical ease and tonal purity," pianistSarah Hagen is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing in concerts across Canada as well as in the United States, France, Italy, Germany and Sweden. Her interpretations have been described as "outstandingly inventive," performed with "infinite skill." Miss Hagen has been heard on Swedish Radio 2, CBC Radio and numerous radio stations across the United States. Her solo
album, Glass House Dancing, was nominated for a 2009 Western Canadian Music Award in the category of Classical Recording of the Year.
